Incorrect Notice of Codings

In a recent report it was revealed that HMRC had over charged taxpayers £3.5bn of tax as a result of 5.6m people having incorrect tax codes.

Where over payments of tax have arisen, tax payers are sometimes advised by HMRC of the overpayment. However, in order to recover the overpayment, they  have to claim the refund from  HMRC via the HMRC app or by logging into their Government Gateway Account (Personal Tax Account).

In view of the errors in collection of tax, we would advise individuals, whose tax affairs are releatively complex to submit self assessment tax returns. This would include anyone subject to the High Income Child Benefit Tax Charge, those having to repay Winter Fuel Allowance or those with total income of £100,000 or more.
