Double Cab Pick Up U Turn

On 19 February 2024 the government announced a U turn and have stated that the previously announced change in the tax treatment of double cab pick ups, will not go ahead. The change in status was due to take place in July 2024.

Double cab pick ups will continue to be treated at vans for the purposes of capital allowances and income tax benefits in kind. This contrasts to the treatment of genuine vans with 2 rows of seats, such as VW Transporter vans, which are treated as cars.

So we revert to the position of the vehicle which looks like a car being treated as a van and the vehcle which looks like a van being treated as a car.

The change in position has no impact on the VAT treatment of both types of vehicles, which is that they are treated as vans.
